DAISY
came to The Book Shop to sign copies of her new books 'Bringing
Up Baby' and 'Silver River'............
.................................................."Silver
River" is a memoir in which Daisy reveals that her
mother ran off when Daisy was six, leaving their safe, middle-class
life in London for a 'dirty, rude, sexy' northern boy called
Joe in Swanage.
The
need to share childhood holidays between two geographically
seperate parents also instigated Daisy's association with,
and love of, Dorset. In the book Daisy recounts that she
never resented her mother's absence or divided holidays
until shortly after the birth of her first daughter Ottilie,
when she tumbled headlong into a depression so profound
that she could understand the lure of suicide - fortunately,
she found herself looking at her baby and thinking "I
would never, could never, leave her".
Nevertheless,
Daisy was left with the "astonishing, unacceptable
fact that my mother had left me with the fact that I still
loved her with an intensity that time hadn't dimmed",
and with the need and determination to make sense of it
all. "Silver River" recounts her fascinating odyssey
to do just that.

this book as a recipe book for life: turn
to it when you need some advice on everything from growing
up to getting old; look to it for consolation when the phone
doesn't ring or for inspiration when you are trying to do
the right thing; consult it for words that set the mood for

emergencies or reach for it for reassurance when you find
a new wrinkle or an extra pound; or have it handy simply to
read some of the finest poems in the English language.
The
poems within, old and new, chart every trajectory of human

the traumas of adolescence, and arrive at the serial destinations
of love, marriage, parenthood, the loss of love, ageing,
bereavement, with detours into work, dieting, infidelity
and bad hair days. Whatever life has to throw at you, there
will be words here to make sense of it. Destined to be stained
with wine, tears and marmite sandwiches in years to come,
