EYES RIGHT

Your eyes, they hold a promise of delight,
Of untold depths of ecstasy and passion.
Of wanderings through the valley of the night,
How fortunate mascara is in fashion.

They tell of hidden lands, the moon beyond,
To wonderful adventures they’re a sign.
They float like petals in a lily pond,
Oh yes, that black mascara suits you fine.

They sparkle like the waters in a brook,
They bloom like roses in a garden hedge.
They’re like a fairy story in a book,
It must be that mascara round the edge!

The names given to the dollies have a fascination of their own. The Essex Bar Terret, Barton Turf Dolly, The Harvest Ring, The Teardrop, Double Spiral Neck and many others. The list is endless.

The Golden Dolly, M. Lambeth, published by John Baker.
Folklore Customs of Rural England, Margaret Baker, David and Charles.
Calendar of Country Customs, Ralph Whitlock, Batsford Press.
The Art of Making Corn Dollies, S. J. Reid, The Lutterworth Press.
