The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
As Roy’s first work of fiction, this story is strikingly beautiful and masterfully told. Set in India and following the childhood memories of a pair of twins, Rahel and Estha, while the world around them moves to unrest and their personal lives develop. The book is profoundly lyrical and you’ll catch yourself rereading sentences in awe. Sorrow is inescapable in the story, but so is wit, joy and rawness. It’s incredible, and absolutely a modern classic.
