Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
This book is set in the American Deep South. Looking at the contemporary underbelly of American society it addresses race, prejudice, poverty. This is beautifully written with wonderful dialogue and almost painterly descriptions of landscapes and sensory experiences such as smell and taste. Though shocking and awful, it feels important that we bear witness and the story ultimately leaves the reader recognising the struggle of survival and the endurance of human integrity and decency.
